Our children in a human zoo in 1958 and the oppressive spectators are laughing happily.. 🤔
Thursday thoughts? 💭 👀 Deep Racism: The Forgotten History Of Human Zoos Human Zoo or #NegroVillage #Racism is deeply embedded in our culture. #Slavery of African people, ethnic cleansing of Native Americans and colonialist imperialism are seeds that intertwine to create racism that still has impacts today. One example of the sad human history of racism — of colonizers seeing themselves as superior to others — is the long history of human zoos that featured Africans and conquered indigenous peoples, putting them on display in much the same way as animals. People would be kidnapped and brought to be exhibited in human zoos. It was not uncommon for these people to die quickly, even within a year of their captivity. This history is long and deep and continued into the 1950s. Several articles below with lots of photos so we can see the reality of this terrible legacy. KZ Throughout the late 19th century, and well into the 1950′s, Africans and in some cases Native Americans, were kept as exhibits in zoos. Far from a relic from an unenlightened past, remnants of such exhibits have continued in Europe as late as the 2000′s. 👑 In the 1967 Massey Lectures, Martin Luther King, Jr. writes: “Canada is not merely a neighbor to Negroes. Deep in our history of struggle for freedom Canada was the north star. The Negro slave, denied education, de-humanized, imprisoned on cruel plantations, knew that far to the north a land existed where a fugitive slave if he survived the horrors of the journey could find freedom. The legendary underground railroad started in the south and ended in Canada. The freedom road links us together. Our spirituals, now so widely admired around the world, were often codes. We sang of "heaven” that awaited us and the slave masters listened in innocence, not realizing that we were not speaking of the hereafter. Heaven was the word for Canada and the Negro sang of the hope that his escape on the underground railroad would carry him there. One of our spirituals, Follow the Drinking Gourd, in it’s disguised lyrics contained directions for escape. The gourd was the big dipper, and the north star to which its handle pointed gave the celestial map that directed the flight to the Canadian border. So standing today in Canada I am linked with the history of my people and its unity with your past.“ The complete lectures can be found in The Lost Massey Lectures published by House of Anansi. Hope some of those that are always in “Denial”..will start to awaken the “Common Sense” that lays dormant within them. Wow they’ll killl you and say you liked it… French President Macron blamed Africans for the slave markets in Libya and gave numerous other paternalizing comments during a rough start to his visit to Africa that was aimed at restoring French relations with the continent. .
